Searsville Dam falls at our year end celebration!

Thanks to everyone (listed below) that came to, supported, and made our Dec. 1 “Give and Dam!” fundraiser a great success! With your support we are over halfway to meeting our year end goal of raising $150,000 to:

  1. 1.a) Hire a full time position to manage day to day operations and expand our educational and outreach initiatives.

  2. 2.b) Continue our expert legal team effort to ensure that Stanford complies with environmental laws.

  3. 3.c) Produce a documentary film about finding a watershed-based solution to the Searsville Dam problem.

Our "Give a Dam!" event, sponsored by Patagonia, American Rivers, California Trout, and dozens of other groups, businesses, and generous individuals, drew over 250 people and generous donations from supporters that could not attend. Thanks to everyone listed below for helping to push this movement to the next level!

BSD supporters fill the Oshman event hall in Palo Alto and eye the model Searsville Dam on stage as presenters describe the environmental damage and safety concerns with the cracked and antiquated dam, as well as the unique opportunity Stanford and surrounding neighbors have with dam removal.

Following a silent auction and performance by the Windy Hill Bluegrass Band, speeches made by Matt Stoecker the Director of Beyond Searsville Dam, Richard Roos-Collins of the Water and Power Law Group, Steve Rothert and Stanford alumnus Elizabeth Soderstrom of American Rivers, and Yvon Chouinard, the owner of Patagonia and recipient of the first ever Searsville Sledge and Beyond Searsville Dam "Dam Buster" award.

Yvon Chouinard explains why Searsville, like so many destructive old dams, will come down "because we have the law on our side and Stanford will benefit from removal". "I've never seen a dam owner or community regret removing a problem dam. It's a win-win for everybody."

Event Coordinator Brendon Bell hangs the new Searsville Sledge and Dam Buster award at the Palo Alto Patagonia store. The award was presented to Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia at the event for their leadership and support of our coalition.

Matt Stoecker with environmental legend Martin Litton, a San Francisquito Creek watershed native

Many environmental legends came to show their support and were honored for there decades of leadership and activism. Martin Litton, of Portola Valley, successfully stopped several huge dams from being built in the middle of the 1900's that would have destroyed the Grand Canyon, Green River, and other national treasures. He helped stop the era of big dam construction, which also started the dam removal movement. Pete McCloskey, a Beyond Searsville Dam advisor, Stanford Law School Alumnus, co-author of the Endangered Species Act, and former local congressman was honored for his tenacity and protection of our natural heritage. Rob Caughlan, co-founder of Friends of the River, and Surfrider's first president was honored for his efforts to impeach Nixon, protect California watersheds and coastline, and for being an early promoter of dam removal as a way to restore watersheds, native species, beaches, and wetlands. Many other environmental heros were at the event and we thank you all for your continued efforts and support!

After an exciting and successful live auction, Bob Slobe and Kim Milligan were the lucky winning bidders to come up on stage and blow up the large replica of Searsville Dam. A fitting end to a wonderful night!

(Of course, the dam would not be removed in this fashion in real life without the reservoir drained and following a comprehensive plan to improve habitat conditions and public safety in the watershed. Other removal methods like gradual notching and concrete block removal may be more appropriate for Searsville).

Many thanks to Brendon Bell and all of the Patagonia store employees for collecting used boxes, designing, building and demolishing the cardboard Searsville Dam!!

Please consider making a year end tax deductible donation to ensure that we can continue to advocate for removal of Searsville Dam in a manner beneficial to creekside communities, watershed health, and the San Francisco Bay ecosystem.

A huge thanks to everyone and all the businesses that attended, supported, and donated to our event and year end fundraising effort. With your generousity we are close to reaching our 2011 goal!!
